Related MnSCU Board Policy: 3.36 Academic Programs
Related MnSCU Board Procedure: 3.36.1 Academic Programs
Purpose: To identify and document the requirements a student must
complete in order to attain a degree, certificate, or other award.
Part 1: Catalog publication
The Normandale Community College catalog is published annually by June 1.
Requirements of the catalog take effect at the beginning of the following fall
semester after the catalog is published and remain in effect through the end
of the academic year (the end of the following summer term).
Part 2: Catalog requirements
Subpart A: Catalog Requirements: Students will follow the requirements
of the catalog in effect at the time of the student’s admission to the college
and initial registration in the program.
Subpart B: Catalog Change: Students may elect to follow subsequent
college approved catalog requirements by submitting a written request to
the Records and Registration Office. Written notice can include email or a
written document submitted to the Records and Registration Office. A
student cannot follow requirements from more than one catalog.
Part 3: Time to completion
Subpart A: Students who enroll consecutively (for an academic year not
including summer) and complete program requirements in four or fewer
years may follow either the catalog requirements in effect at the time of
their initial enrollment or the requirements of any succeeding catalog in
effect during their period of enrollment.
Subpart B: Students who do not enroll or take courses in the program in
consecutive semesters (fall and spring semester, not including summer)
or take longer than four years to complete program requirements may
follow any single catalog in effect during the four-year period preceding
the date they complete the program. Course options and degree,
certificate, and diploma plans from initial enrollment are not guaranteed
without consecutive enrollment in the program or major.
Subpart C: Students who return or re-enter the college after an absence
of two or more semesters, excluding summer, must meet the requirements
of the current catalog upon their return or submit a written request to
change the academic catalog year of record to the Records and
Registration Office. Written notice can include email or a written
document submitted to the Records and Registration Office.
Subpart D: Program Closures, Suspensions and Redesigns.
1. Closures: Academic program closures must include a plan to
accommodate students currently enrolled in the academic program.
Consultation with students as a constituent group is required.
2. Suspensions: The college may suspend an academic program for up
to three years. Students enrolled in a suspended program must be
given a plan to complete the program in the same amount of time
and with the
same number of credits.
3. Redesigns: Program redesigns will update the current catalog of
record to the new, approved program requirements. Students may
remain under the catalog of record at their time of enrollment or
change to the redesigned program. Students have four years to
complete a degree program after it has been closed.
