5.1 Bookstore and Campus Store Returns and Exceptions

Purpose: To promote consistency, efficiency, fairness and effectiveness in the handling of the return of items purchased at the Normandale Community College Textbook Depot and Campus Store.
Part 1: Textbook returns.
Subpart A: Items being returned must be in the same condition as when purchased.
- If purchased shrink-wrapped, must be returned in the original shrink wrap, except as provided for in Part 5, Subpart A.
- If textbook being returned includes an access code, the access code must be in new, unopened condition.
Subpart B: Return dates, except as provided for in Part 5, Subpart B.
- For fall and spring semesters, items must be returned by the end of the second week of classes.
- For summer semester, items must be returned by the end of the first week of classes.
- For a late start class or a class that meets for 2 weeks or less, the textbook must be returned within two business days of the first day of class.
- For a textbook purchased after the second week of the current term, it must be returned within two business days of the purchase date.
Subpart C: All returns must be accompanied by the original sales receipt.
Part 2: General merchandise returns.
Subpart A: Items being returned must be in the same condition as when purchased.
Subpart B: Return Date.
Items must be returned within 30 days of the original purchase date.
Subpart C: All returns must be accompanied by the original sales receipt.
Part 3: Purchases which are not returnable.
The following items may not be returned, except as provided for in Part 5, Subpart C:
Any food, beverage, or cosmetic item; computers and software; items ordered by customer request; packaged merchandise which has been opened.
Part 4: Normandale’s Bookstore website merchandise.
Merchandise purchased through the Normandale Bookstore website that has not been picked up within 45 days of the purchase date will be refunded to the tender used to make the purchase less a 30% restocking fee.
Part 5: Return policy exceptions.
Subpart A: Textbooks sold in shrink wrap may be returned out of the original packaging if:
- Returned by the return deadline;
- The customer agrees to pay a $10.00 shrink-wrapping fee; and
- The textbook is in like-new condition and all access codes and supplemental materials are in new, unopened condition.
Subpart B: Return date exceptions.
Conditions under which exceptions to the return deadlines may be made: Illness or medical emergency, death in the family, College error. Upon agreement with the customer, the College may refund the original purchase price of the textbook less a 30% restocking fee, if the textbook is as follows:
- In the condition in which it was originally purchased; and
- Returned within 60 days of the start of the semester for which it was being used.
Subpart C: Exceptions to campus store returns.
- If merchandise described in Part 3 is purchased, opened, and found to be defective, it may be returned or exchanged.
- If food or beverage is purchased and found to be past its expiration date, it may be returned or exchanged without the original sales receipt.
Part 5: Authorization to accept returns and make exceptions.
Textbook Depot and Campus Store permanent employees are authorized to accept returns and make exceptions based on sufficient register clearance and under the conditions outlined above. Others exceptions may be granted by the Textbook Depot Manager.
