Student Surveys of Instruction:
All faculty members will administer the student survey of instruction (SSI) in every course, every semester. These serve as input for a discussion between the faculty member and the dean, and will be administered to students in a fair and unbiased manner.
Evaluation Process:
Part 1: Adjunct, Temporary Part-Time and Temporary Full-Time Faculty Members
Adjunct, temporary part-time and temporary full-time faculty members will be observed by the dean of the division during their first year of employment. Ongoing observations will be determined by the dean and the faculty member. Communication between the dean and faculty member will take place before the observation. The date and time of the observation will be mutually agreed upon by the dean and the faculty member. Faculty members are encouraged to begin a teaching portfolio, conduct peer reviews, and read all Student Surveys of Instruction every semester. A Critical Self-Reflection/Professional Development Plan will be completed.
Part 2: Probationary Unlimited Full-Time Faculty
Faculty hired as probationary unlimited full-time faculty will be evaluated as follows:
- 1st year of probation: There will be a class observation by the dean of the division, using the college face-to-face observation instructional appraisal form or the online observation instructional appraisal form. Communication between the dean and faculty member will take place before the observation. The date and time of the observation will be mutually agreed upon by the dean and the faculty member. A teaching portfolio will be submitted to the dean by the end of the spring semester. A Critical Self-Reflection/Professional Development Plan will be completed.
- 2nd year of probation: An updated teaching portfolio will be submitted to the dean of the division by the end of the spring semester. A class observation may be requested by the dean or the faculty member. A Critical Self-Reflection/Professional Development Plan will be completed.
- 3rd year of probation: There will be a class observation by the dean of the division, using the college face-to-face observation instructional appraisal form or the online observation instructional appraisal form. Communication between the dean and faculty member will take place before the observation. The date and time of the observation will be mutually agreed upon by the dean and the faculty member. The final teaching portfolio will be submitted to the dean of the division by March 1. A Critical Self-Reflection/Professional Development Plan will be completed. A final conference between the dean and the faculty member will take place by April 1.
Following the final conference, the dean will recommend to the vice president for academic affairs either an unlimited appointment or non-renewal of the appointment. Notification to the faculty member will adhere to MSCF contract requirements.
Probationary faculty with fewer than three years as a temporary full-time faculty member within MnSCU may be subject to up to three years of probation.
“When a faculty member who has held a temporary full-time appointment for three (3) full academic years is rehired to an unlimited full-time position in the same established credential field, the faculty member shall receive an unlimited full-time appointment rather than a probationary appointment.”
MSCF Contract, Article 20, Section 4
Once granted post-probationary status, faculty will be evaluated using the process for post-probationary unlimited full-time faculty.
Part 3: Post-Probationary Unlimited Full-Time Faculty
A Critical Self-Reflection/Professional Development Plan will be completed every year.
Once every three years, post-probationary unlimited full-time faculty will have a focused evaluation followed by a conference with the dean of the division. This evaluation will involve a class observation or online evaluation by the dean. The dean will use the college face-to-face observation instructional appraisal form or the online observation instructional appraisal form. Communication between the dean and faculty member will take place before the observation. The date and time of the observation will be mutually agreed upon by the dean and the faculty member. A written report based on the evaluation conference will be placed in the faculty member’s personnel file with a copy to the faculty member. The schedule of evaluations will be determined and monitored by the dean of the division.
Additionally, a faculty member may choose to submit an updated teaching portfolio.
During each of the two intervening years, the dean of the division or the faculty member may request a class observation.
A notation will be added to each faculty member’s personnel file in the two intervening years confirming compliance with Minnesota statute.
