Academic Renewal
The academic renewal policy allows students to exclude prior coursework from the calculation of Normandale attempted/earned credits and GPA to increase the likelihood of meeting the college’s minimum requirements for satisfactory academic progress for enrollment, graduation, and/or selective program admission. When academic renewal is applied, courses with grades of D, NC, F, NW and W are excluded from Normandale GPA and credit calculations.
Conditions for Eligibility
- The coursework must have been completed at least two years prior to the semester the student submits the petition for academic renewal.
- Following the term(s) for which academic renewal is sought and before applying for academic renewal, the student must complete at least 12 credits at Normandale with a minimum GPA of 2.00. This GPA will be determined by the student’s cumulative Normandale record (all courses with grades of A, B, C, D, F, FN, and FW), following the renewal term(s).
- Following the terms for which academic renewal is sought, the student must have completed (earned a grade of A, B, C, D or P) at least 67% of the cumulative courses in which they have enrolled at Normandale.
- The semesters for which academic renewal is sought must be consecutive on the student’s academic record.
- Students who have already earned a degree from Normandale Community College are not eligible for academic renewal.
- Coursework that has been used to satisfy a requirement of an awarded Minnesota Transfer Curriculum or certificate cannot be considered for academic renewal.
- Prior to submitting a petition for academic renewal, students are encouraged to meet with an advisor or counselor to determine the potential impact of academic renewal the best time to submit the petition.
Benefits
- Improved likelihood of meeting the standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress for enrollment.
- Students can meet the 2.00 GPA requirement for a degree, certificate or MnTC certification.
- Students may qualify for admission to competitive health programs at Normandale.
Disclaimers
- Students lose the credits of a course with a grade of D that was taken in a term for which academic renewal has been granted. These courses cannot be used to satisfy program, degree, certificate, or prerequisite requirements.
- The transcript will continue to reflect the actual courses and grades, but they will no longer be calculated in the GPA or attempted/earned credits. A transcript notation will indicate that academic renewal has been granted.
- Courses subject to academic renewal will still be considered when determining Satisfactory Academic Progress for financial aid and for determining eligibility for commencement honors.
- A student may only be granted academic renewal one time.
- Normandale’s renewal policy does not mean that receiving institutions will honor this adjustment. It is the student’s responsibility to consult their receiving institution.
