ENGL 2133 Native American Literature

Native American literatures, both oral and written, reflect the diversity of the more than 500 indigenous tribes and nations of what is now the United States. Beginning with traditional oral works that predate contact with Europeans, we then move through texts from the 17th century through the present day written by Native American authors. Through discussion and writing, we analyze works from a variety of genres in their historical, literary, and political contexts, noting how these works challenge Native American stereotypes, explore evolving identities, and celebrate the creativity and resilience of America's original peoples.
